Neukirchen am Grossvenediger is a pleasant Austrian village that finds itself in the Salzburgerland, between Zell am See and Krimml. Neukirchen lies on an altitude of 856 meters and has more than 2,800 inhabitants.
The origins reach back into the Middle Ages. Legend has it that Neukirchen once was knows as Mitterdorf and used to stand where the Duernbach water-meadows are today.
The Duernbach is said to have burried the town, whereupon the village was rebuilt with a new church further to the east, where it stands today and then renamed Neukirchen. The town is first mentioned in ancient documents in 1074 as Niwenkirchen.
Neukirchen lies at the foot of the Nationalpark 'Hohe Tauern'. And it has his name from the largest mountain of the Salzburgerland and the Nationalpark: the Grossvenediger. Splendid nature with its wonderful valleys, fresh mountain air, hospitality makes you forget the daily rut, stress and haste. On this website you can read all about this village.
